Earlier this year I got a job at a new restaurant in town. It was a very high-profile place, and supposed to be the next big thing. I was curious about the uniform and assumed it would be something cool. I was wrong! We did have to buy some cool jeans from a place in town, so that was good. (well, its good now that the jeans are finally comfortable– they were insanely tight for the first 3 months. tight jeans + broken AC in the south + stairs at work = RAGE!). But then we had to also get a super ugly and unflattering grey polo shirt. Boooooooo. But then the worst part of all were the aprons, which look like Carhart overalls. They are mid-calf length, super heavy, and now showing pen stains all over the place. The worst!
I couldnt stand any part of the uniform and I decided to take matters into my own hands by meeting with my manager and suggesting a new apron, which I would make. I found a company making waxed cotton since 1838, chemical free. The waxed cotton is cool because it’s really lightweight and sort of feels like leather. It also doesnt show stains, which is perfect. I brought in some fabric samples and a mock up apron in plain cotton. Then I ordered the actual fabric and made another mock up.
This was way back in June when I first met with my manager, so it’s definitely been a slow process. Last week there was an event at work to celebrate the airing of the new season of Mind of a Chef, which Sean Brock was on. So there were a lot of chefs and “important people” at the party. So the managers wanted the servers working it to look better than we normally do, (they know the aprons are hideous!). I mentioned that I had extra fabric and could make two more aprons for the party.
I came home and whipped up two more aprons overnight (they dont take long) and we wore them to the party. Two people even asked about orders and if they could get some made as well, one for a potter, and one for a cooking school in town. Cool! And my manager posted a photo on instagram and had some interest there as well!
Three servers are going to wear them while I am out of town and make sure they hold up alright and if so I will have a full order when I get back! They are quick and easy to make and much more comfortable and stylish than the current monstrosities, so I hope everything works out!
